FORT AT CROWN POINT LETTERBOX
CROWN POINT, NY

The first fort at Crown Point was built by the French in 1735, and was called Fort St. Frederic. It was the staging point for Montcalm's attack on, and destruction of, Fort William Henry, featured in Cooper's The Last of the Mohicans

The French abandoned the fort in 1759, blowing it up as they retreated before the forces of Lord Jeffery Amherst. The British built a new fort close by- the largest of all colonial forts on the North American continent. It never saw any military action, however, and was virtually destroyed by a fire and explosion in 1773.

His Majesty's Fort at Crown Point had a parade ground five acres in size! Click here for pictures. Then take a deep breath and fall in!

"Tramp! tramp! tramp! The boys are marching.
Cheer up comrades, they will come."
