Religious Education Classes begin in September each year and run through May.
It's that time of year to sign up for religious education for St. Mary's / St. Joseph's Parish. Children's Religious Education classes for 2018 - 2019 have begun. Children ages 3-12: Level 1, ages 3 to 6, Level 2, ages 6 to 9 and Level 3, ages 9 to 12, will meet on Wednesday afternoons from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM in one of the three atrium rooms at the Nolan-Murry Center, which is across the parking lot from St. Mary's Church in Springfield. This is the first year for level 3 - for 9-12 year olds. If you are interested in learning about this unique Montessori Religious Education program, "The Catechesis of the Good Shepherd", please contact Eileen at firstname.lastname@example.org or 885-4123. You can also look at the program's website, www.cgsusa.org. If your child has participated in the past, I will be sending registration forms to you. Nevertheless, all parents with children in the age range for catechism should contact Eileen. Two year Confirmation preparation classes in the past began for students entering the 9th grade, but this year - 2018 - because of changes described below, St. Mary's and St. Joseph's welcome any 7th, 8th, or 9th grade student to join our Confirmation classes, but any high school student can enroll. Bishop Coyne has decided that, beginning in the academic year 2021-2022, the grade for Confirmation in our diocese will be the sixth grade. Because of this change, parishes are beginning to reduce the age of Confirmation preparation this year and will continue to reduce the age until reaching the diocesay goal. Confirmation classes meet on the fourth Sunday of the month beginning in September. Please contact Eileen at email@example.com or 885-4123 for registration forms. If your child has participated in the past, I will be sending registration forms to you. Nevertheless, all parents with children in the age/grade range for Confirmation preparation should contact Eileen.
“Creator of all things, true source of light and wisdom, origin of all being, graciously let a ray of your light penetrate the darkness of my understanding. Take from me the double darkness in which I have been born, an obscurity of sin and ignorance. Give me a keen understanding, a retentive memory, and the ability to grasp things correctly and fundamentally. Grant me the talent of being exact in my explanations and the ability to express myself with thoroughness and charm. Point out the beginning, direct the progress, and help in the completion.” Thomas Aquinas
Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) - Generations Of Faith
Four years ago, our parish transitioned from the more traditional classroom based education model for Religious Education to a parish family curriculum based on the "life of the church". All parishioners of any age are invited and encouraged to attend. We established a parish-wide religious education program, so that each parishioner will know as much about Jesus, the Scriptures, the Church, our Creed, Liturgical and Prayer life and moral choices, as possible. How often has each of us thought, "I wish I knew more about my own Faith?" Each of us should be able to teach our children, grandchildren, the youth of our parish and inquirers about what Catholics believe, why and how we worship, and how we live according to those beliefs. The second Sunday of each month, we gather as a parish community, including the children, for 9:00 Mass, followed by a shared meal at 10:00 AM in the Nolin Murry Center and a common lesson on a specific aspect of our faith at 10:30 AM. The children are invited to attend separate classes, on the same topic as the adult lesson but developed for them! In order to keep a record of the religious education of our children and measure the response to our program, we are asking everyone who will participate to register. You can start anytime! This year our focus on Our Creed continues from last year. Please plan to join us on this exciting journey into understanding our faith and passing it on. *Please note, the children who will be entering a year of sacramental preparation, First Reconciliation/Holy Communion and Confirmation, will have additional classes throughout the year to address these special sacramental programs. If you have any questions or need to register your child, please call the Religious Education Coordinator, Eileen Kendall at 885-4123 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
