Ezra Veitch

Welcome to Ezra Veitch's website.  This is my first time on the web and I hope you enjoy what you find.  If you have any problems or questions please e-mail me at redaxe@sover.net    ENJOY!

So my name is Ezra Veitch and I would like to point out that the site offers a few different features. I am a bit of a jack of all trades as an artist/performer and I regularly work with other artists and performers in the area, so at times you may see them included here.
I am a native to southern Vermont and have spent all of my childhood in the green mountains (something I am very thankful for!) and it wasn't until after high school I really took the opportunity to travel.  This journey is where the artwork and music within comes from.

ART

I embraced artwork as a child.  My family always shared their artistic side with me, and I grew to love drawing and music.  By the time I reached high school my reputation as an artist was already established.  As a freshmen I was recognized by the state as a runner-up in the Congressional Art Contest here in Vermont.  I met both senators, Sanders and Jeffords, which was a great experience.

School points people in different directions, sometimes it separates kids into groups and sometimes it even alienates them.  Bellows Falls was like this, but I found my direction with help from teachers and friends.  I think it takes a lot of work from the student to get to where they have an idea of what it is they want to do in life.  BF showed me a lot of options and gave me a lot of opportunities, such as Odyssey of the Mind, a strong music program and many great drama productions.  It was these things that set me in motion.

I chose to move to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to attend Carnegie Mellon University in the fall of 1992and enrolled in the College of fine arts to study Illustration.  College...man I was there, for a little while.  I dove right in and learned that I really didn't have a lot of "Knowledge" concerning art history and technique.  I was really a "homegrown" artist, and would find my work being the focus of many critiques.  This was really hard at first, for example, when I turned in my first assignment for professor Herb Olds, I was really put on the spot.  He pointed out that I was not drawing - I was Cartooning.  He made it clear that this was unacceptable and that I was capable of much better work... well I got pissed off, but I took his advice and focused on his lessons, and pretty soon I was seeing things in a way I never had before.  I got really hungry for Knowledge... I was on fire!  Other classes fed this need, and soon I really started to define my ability.

When I came up for review at the end of my sophomore year, Herb was on my committee with two other professors and we spent a couple hours going through my slides and some work which was not documented and my sketch books.  Something really cool happened that day... I realized that I was at the point where I knew who I was as an Artist.  I no longer needed to study at a University. School had taught me the most important thing-How to solve my own problems and get things done.  Herb pointed out how my work had come full circle, from cartooning to the study of form, light and shade, back to cartooning using all these elements.  So I took these things, packed my bags and went on an adventure........

This page (Art) will give you examples of the types of artwork I do.  Recently, I've gotten into sketching - like the sketch at left that became the mural in Bellows Falls on Westminster Street near The Square.  Copies of this sketch are available for sale.  For more information on obtaining my artwork, please contact me at redaxe@sover.net

Another of my sketches of Bellows Falls is being used by the Bellows Falls Downtown Development Alliance Promotions Committee for the www.bellowsfalls.org website and their Shopping and Dining brochure.

Music
So the journey took me south west by train to Houston Texas where I spent most of the next year living.  I was living with some friends from school, playing celtic music.  You may have heard them before.  They are called Clandestine and you can check them out here.  www.io.com/clandestine/

I spent some time with these folks and spent time performing with the Texas Renaissance Festival www.texasrenfest.com and had a really great time exploring parts of Texas.  It was here where I started playing guitar and writing songs.  So many things happened, but it's really hard to relate, so I found my way back to Vermont in the spring of 1996. ***more photos possible***

When I got back to Vermont I joined up with a couple of fellows from high school and we made a short run at being a rock band but that was ill fated, and I ended up joining forces with a dude named Les Rios  www.lesrios.com and we started playing together under the name UNREEL.  We were something to see.  Les is pretty heavy-duty, if you know him you understand.  He's really a great songwriter and he has a huge library of music.  Together we recorded the Unreel-Demo Tape in a couple of days at POFO Productions in Hinsdale NH and set out to play shows all over Vt.  After a year+ together, we parted ways but not before we saw the studio once more.  This time we were at sound design studios in downtown Brattleboro.  Unfortunately the breakup that followed the recording led to the music never going to CD (My music that is).  I hope someday I can afford to produce my five songs from those sessions properly for my listeners.

So I was back at the drawing board so to speak.  Now I was really set on playing my own thing.  So the past couple years have been here and there in the area playing open mics and working out tunes for gigs. At the moment I am constructing my own debut album, entitled Ezra Veitch~Lion's Den.

It will be a home studio production thanks to the generous help of my friend, singer/songwriter/engineer Joe Stacey, from Summersky Recordings in North Walpole NH.  www.summerskyrecordings.com   I could not have pulled this together without the help of people like Joe and the strong force of Charlie Hunter's Flying Under Radar and my other friends in the community.
