Competencies:
describe how planned giving differs from other forms of philanthropy
determine when, to whom, and how to ask for a bequest
identify outside counsel in your area
explain the relative advantages and disadvantages of planned giving for the giver and the recipient
define the different types of planned giving
outline the steps for organizing a planned giving effort
Demonstration of Competencies:
(a) locate and interview one professional in your area who assists individuals in preparing bequests (e.g. an attorney, banker, planned giving specialist or financial counselor); you may conduct this interview by phone or e-mail if there is no one in your area who does such work
OR
(b) join a listserv on planned giving or review its archives and post a summary of a recent discussion
AND
(b) identify your own strengths and limits in planned gift solicitation
(c) post at least one interesting fact or piece of information you've discovered about planned giving
