John Sayles ("Lone Star"/"Return of the Secaucus Seven"/"The Brother From Another Planet") is writer-director of this captivating drama.

Bernice (LisaGay Hamilton) is an officious LA parole officer and Fontayne (Yolonda Ross) is an ex-con and former junkie, who is now working the grill in a fast food place and is one of Bernice's parolees. They were close friends in high school, but have since gone their separate ways. When Bernice's estranged former marine son Rodney becomes a suspect in the death of a crime boss, Bernice enlists Fontayne's help in locating her missing son. They trace him to hanging out with disgraced police detective Freddy Suarez (Edward James Olmos. He leads them to Tijuana, where Rodney may have been smuggling Chinese immigrants into the United States.

Sayles creates a dangerous world to navigate, and its three main characters in their dark journey encounter many suspicious underbelly Tijuana characters.

It's an intriguing work, one that is handled intelligently and with sensitive acting from the leads.
