John Sayles ("Lone Star"/"Return of the Secaucus Seven"/"The Brother From Another Planet") is writer-director of this captivating drama.
(LisaGay Hamilton) is an officious LA parole officer
and Fontayne (Yolonda Ross) is an ex-con and former
junkie, who is now working the grill in a fast food
place and is one of Bernice's parolees. They were
close friends in high school, but have since gone
their separate ways. When Bernice's estranged former
marine son Rodney becomes a suspect in the death of a
crime boss, Bernice enlists Fontayne's help in
locating her missing son. They trace him to hanging
out with disgraced police detective Freddy
Suarez (Edward James Olmos. He leads them to Tijuana,
where Rodney may have been smuggling Chinese
immigrants into the United States.

main characters in their dark journey encounter many
