Saint Specialties Kegs FAQ Page
Thank you for selecting a Saint Specialties Keg for your Saint!
What Are the Kegs Made of? How do they stand the test of time? Storage and display:
Kegs are wood products which expand and contract depending on moisture. Over time the oak, cherry and walnut woods mellow to their final coloration. The first keg we made back in about 1986 still hangs in our shop - good as new!
When your keg arrives it is "new" wood coated with a protective lacquer. It may even still smell "factory fresh". The color will change as noted above. To keep it in shiny new condition we recommend an occasional polishing with Scott's Liquid Gold wood protectant.
Do you "rent" kegs or provide them for use in advertising?
NO! Absolutely not. We do not believe in the exploitation of the Saint Bernard for commercial activity or profit. Suddenly people who do not know what they are getting into want a "Cute Dog" and too many of them end up in bad homes or in Rescue.
How big are the kegs? Do you make other sizes?
We make only one size. All the kegs measure about 6 and 1/4 inches long and 4 and 1/4 inches front to back. It is the proper size for a mature Saint. If you buy one for your puppy you will be surprised how fast your Saint will "grow into his keg".
Can my dog actually wear his keg?
Sure! The Oak kegs weigh over a pound, empty and almost 2 pounds full. Walnut and Cherry kegs are about 60% lighter weight.
What is the proper way to put the keg on the dog?
Full instructions will come with your keg. One either side of the collar you will find 2 rectanglar brass "Sliders". Move the collar material through the sliders until it fits the dog's neck size snugly. The keg should be worn under the dog's chin.
Does the Spigot come out? What takes its place?
Yes, the spigot is removable when not in use. We provide a top cork or bung and an end cork or bung to use when you are not using or displaying the keg with the spigot in place.
Never force the spigot into the bottom drain - be gentle.
Any suggestions for really using the keg?
Sure. We suggest rinsing well with a dilute chlorine solution and always allowing the inside of the keg to dry completely after any liquid use. We give ours a good steady blast of cold air from the hair dryer to make sure the inside is completely dry before replacing the top and bottom bungs.
Can we Get a Keg for Christmas?: Sure, but order early. For 10 years we have been SOLD OUT FOR CHRISTMAS By LATE OCTOBER. If you are looking for a keg as a Christmas present or to have a Holiday Card Photo Taken, please order EARLY.
Can the keg hold my dog's ashes after he has Gone to Rainbow Bridge?
Yes. In fact the nice thing about having the keg with your Dog's name on it is that it can become his lasting Memorial. Your Veterinarian can perform this service for you or we will gladly do it at Saint Specialties when the time comes.
How about a Picture?
We love pictures of Saints with our kegs and display them all. We would love to include your dog in our Gallery at home and on the Web. Please send them to the Saint Specialties address given on the website, or e-mail us at newfvt@sover.net. (Letting us know in advance that a large photo file will be coming is always appreciated due to our rural phone system's "SLOW download" time!)
Legal Gobble-D-Gook:
Saint Specialties kegs are sold for display purposes only.
Why do you have to say that?
Because as a very small hobby business, the cost of testing these products to assure safety is prohibitive. If we paid some fancy testing lab to "prove" the kegs can safely hold liquids for consumption, that cost spread across our small annual sales would make the cost of your keg prohibitive.
90-percent of our kegs are sold fully equipped. While we make every effort to assure the keg may contain cold nonalcoholic liquids, we can make no guarantee that it either will contain liquids or that this product is either safe or fit to contain liquids intended for any purpose including human or animal consumption. Use in this manner is soley at the risk of the purchaser and we assume no responsibility. Your purchase is made with this understanding.
