Neutral density (ND) filters are generally bought in sets and are used to attenuate light by an exact known amount.   We manufacture an 11 step neutral density filter which in effect replaces 11 separate filters.    

The continuous variable density filters can be extremely useful in that they act as a “light dimmer” for light sources such as lasers.   The configurations are as shown in either a circular or linear continuous progression.
