Lubrication
Lubrication of moving parts is what keeps them from wearing out
immediately. Just because we no longer need to crawl under the car
every weekend to grease 36 fittings, and change the oil every 750
miles, doesn't mean we no longer have a need for lubrication. Many
parts of a car nowadays have improved ability to keep the weather out
and are often lubricated for "life" at the factory. New space age
materials help quite a bit, too. We have teflon and nylon bearings
that need no attention for years, and then only because rust got to
the steel part that the bearing was "bearing". Improved lubricants
allow us to forget about changing transmission gear oils for the life
of a car, but that life would be longer sometimes if the gear oil were
changed evry 2 years. A few bucks worth of oil now and then is a lot
cheaper than a rebuilt transmission, which could run into 4 figures
quite easily.
