A record of Robert Burnham of Oyster River and his descendents. Most of the information is from the History of the Town of Durham New Hampshire, vols I and II, 1913, Stackpole, Thompson, and Meserve (herein: Durham TH). Additional data, included from other sources and from data personally collected since 1972, are footnoted.
1. ROBERT1 BURNHAM was born about 1614, probably in Norwich, England. He was one of seven children of Robert and Mary (Andrews) Burnham, three of whom came to New England on the ship, "Angel Gabriel", which was shipwrecked at Pemiquid, ME, 15 Aug 1635. He and his brothers, John and Thomas, made their way to Ipswich, MA, with their uncle, Capt. Robert Andrews, master of the "Angel Gabriel". They were young men at the time and, perhaps, had only come for the ride as crew members. He was of Ipswich in 1636 and in Boston in 1644, and settled at Oyster River (now Durham, NH, but then a part of Dover) in 1654 where he owned 200 acres of land. He was a carpenter by trade and a selectman in Dover for many years. He married Frances ------, in Boston in 1646. She was not a daughter of Valentine Hill, as many have suggested. He died in Ipswich MA at the home of his brother, Thomas, June 12, 1691.
