    GIZMO'S GOSSIP     Gizmo

Sad News!

Hi Everyone.
How many times did we read that introduction to Gizmo's gossip. At least 75 we can recall. Sadly, that era has ended. After battling congestive heart failure for 6 months, he developed other serious conditions which left us no alternative, in early Dec, but to spare him further suffering. We were by his side as he took his last breath.

Not only did Gizmo have his own Facebook page and his own fan club, but we were told several times that his columns were used in schools in creative writing classes. Teachers would even be called by students during the summer to see what was new with Gizmo.

At the inn he was everyone's companion and loved nothing more than to lead guests on hikes up our trails. Of course once they had gone as far as they wanted and turned around, Gizmo would hightail it back to the inn, figuring "I got you there, you should be able to get yourselves back."

We were fortunate he was part of our family for 14 years. When we learned 6 months ago about his illness we knew his time was short. He had time to get to know and pass on the reigns to his two new younger brothers Elmo and Grover who we will introduce to next month.

"Those we love don't go away, they walk beside us every day. Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear." Author unknown

Pretty Callie

The year 2012 will always be remembered as a year of loss for us. We lost Callie in November to complications of heartworm. She had been neglected and abused most of her life as a stray. She became part of our family when we brought her home with us from Pensicola, FL. She was a part of our family for 2 years.

Winter Midweek Special

Buck Hollow Farm, Fairfax, VT

The annual arrival of winter marks the annual arrival of our winter special. Weekends are always busy in the hospitality business, just as they are at the ski slopes and other winter resorts. But oh those weekdays !!! Those empty beds !! That's what prompted us to create our annual half price weekday specials. It works like this.

Stay with us between now and April 30 and to the extent your stay includes at least two weekday nights (Sun-Thu) those weekday nights will be at half price. So, for example, a Mon-Tue-Wed stay would be totally half price. For a Sat-Sun-Mon stay, Saturday would be at regular rates and both Sun and Mon would be half price.

Enough to warm even the coldest of hearts.

We have plenty of snow to snowshoe on our groomed trails without traveling anywhere. Why not take advantage of the winter snow and go on a sleigh ride or trail ride at Lajoie Stables.

Here are a few of our favorite winter vacation ideas:

  • Eden Dog Sledding - Their dogs are The UN-Chained Gang - free-range, never chained! - joyful, loving, intelligent, incredible dogs!!! They LOVE to cuddle and play with you, help you learn to harness and hitch them into a team--and of course they are ecstatic to take you sledding on wheels in the warm months and on snow in the Winter!
  • Zip Lining at Smuggler's Notch - Traverse high above an ever-babbling mountain stream and spend time among centuries-old hemlocks, mature sugar maples and paper birch on Vermont's first world-class zip line canopy tour.

Designed to educate, entertain, and inspire, the zip line canopy tour consists of a series of zip lines through dense mountain forest, suspension bridges, and rappels. Travelling in small groups, each tour is accompanied by two guides familiar with the local ecology and natural history who are prepared to deliver an unforgettable experience.

So whether you're 9 or 90; a thrill seeker, nature lover, or both; we're certain the canopy tour will be an experience you'll share and recount for years to come. Bring yourself, your family, your friends, your church group, and your work group but remember, while the canopy tour is open year round, advance reservations are required.

  • Taking a Horse-Drawn Sleigh Ride - Nothing evokes an image of a traditional New England winter more than sleigh rides through the farm lands of northern Vermont. Nearby Lajoie Stables offers many types of sleigh rides, from large family get togethers to a romantic evening sleigh ride for two. They have four New England style sleighs to choose from. Evening rides, star lit rides, or fun day time rides are all available. The Lajoie sleigh ride begins in serene forest land, and circles through their Christmas tree grove and into the tranquility of the open fields. Lajoie accepts Visa/MasterCard. Reservations are required. (802) 644-5347
  • Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing on site - we are part of the V.A.S.T. snowmobile system and have groomed trails right on the property for cross-country skiing or make use of our complimentary snowshoes to explore the trails.
  • Playing in the Snow - there are plenty of places to enjoy a spontaneous snow ball fight, build a snowman, or make snow angels. After some outdoor fun, warm up by the fireplace in our sunroom, and enjoy complimentary hot cocoa, hot tea, coffee.
  • Hot Tubbing under the Stars  - as you plan your days, don't forget to reserve some time in our outdoor Hot Tub. Our Hot Tub is ideally located outside the sunroom for an evening dip under the magnificent Vermont winter sky.
  • Thanks, Brad & Jacquie
