***Antiques of Buck Hollow***

    GIZMO'S GOSSIP     Gizmo

Not Older...Just Better!

Hi Everyone. Gizmo here.

HOW SWEET IT IS !!!!!! I'm not talking about the hockey game, not basking in the glow of a basketball game, or even an election victory (though Utah was elected social secretary of the Buck Hollow Canine Association).
No ! I am walking on air about the many faithful readers who remembered my birthday on Valentine's Day. Isabel in Houston, Lisa in Medford, Lois in New York, Horace Weiner in Chicago, Jules in Toledo, Bill in Rochester and Mark in Pensacola are among them while Neil and Sharon from Ottawa actually BROUGHT me treats !

I was really touched. Thank you all. Next time I see you I have a tongue reserved especially for you.

I have been banned from the Pet Photo Contest, Yes, I know. Usually family members can not enter such contests. However, though I am not supposed to know this, notwithstanding what was announced on these pages the last two years, I was actually the winner as a result of a massive write in campaign. I am not at liberty to disclose who organized and managed that campaign, it will be left to your imagination.

My fans on Facebook will  have a sneak peak at some of the pet photo entries before the voting page becomes available. The Inn is now on Facebook and has more fans than me :(

Good luck to all my cousins whose photos will be coming. AND REMEMBER ! Only one photo per household and only one VOTE per person. In the past there have been some voting irregularities. I don't want Jimmy Carter knocking on my door.

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Big Soft Ginger Cookies

Researchers from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center have found that ginger not only kills cancer cells, it also prevents them from building up resistance to cancer treatment. Ginger is already used as an effective remedy for nausea and inflammation. These nicely spiced soft cookies are perfect for folks who like the flavor of ginger but don't care for crunchy gingersnaps. These are always on hand in the guest sunroom for a quick snack.

3/4 cup butter  softened
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1/4 cup molasses
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 tsp ground ginger
1 tsp baking soda

3/4 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp ground cloves
1/4 tsp salt
Additional sugar

1. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and sugar. Beat in egg and molasses.

2. Combine the flour, ginger, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves and salt; gradually add to the creamed mixture.

3. Roll into 2 inch  balls, and then roll in sugar. Place 2 inches apart on an ungreased baking sheet.

4. Bake at 350 degrees F for 10- 20 minutes until lightly browned. Remove to wire rack to cool.

3rd Annual Pet Photo Contest!!

Zeidel the Birdwatcher

We  are pleased to announce  Gizmo's 3rd Annual Pet Photo Contest. It's a chance for other pets to shine besides Gizmo. It also doesn't hurt that the 1st prize is two free nights, and a second prize of one night at the Inn.

So here's how it works. Between now and March 22, send us a photo of your pet, along with its name,  your email address and a very short title for the picture. Mom will be creating a web site which will have all the submitted photos. That site will be announced in the next newsletter along with instructions on how to submit your vote (it's really easy, even Utah could do it). We will use the month of April to tally it up and make the official announcement in the following newsletter. The winner will be awarded two complimentary nights at the inn with second place receiving one night.

IMPORTANT ! Only one photo per household can be accepted.  Send all entries to Pet Photo Entry  . Gizmo will give his fans on Facebook a sneak peak of some of the entries. It should be fun.

PLEASE NOTE:  We still have 3 rooms available for the Maple Sugar Weekend. It's an opportunity to eat maple syrup all weekend. Tap a tree, see how it's done and then reap the rewards with a meal  on Saturday evening. Bill Fairchild  a native  Vermonter has been sugaring for over 20 years, he'll show you how it's done and will join us for dinner to share stories and answer all your questions.

We continue to run a Winter Midweek Special which offers 50% savings on weeknight stays of two nights or longer ( Must be requested when making reservation). Please see the SPECIALS link on our web page.

 Maple Sugaring

2nd Annual Maple Sugar Weekend (Friday March 12 - March 14th) - Over the years we’ve fielded thousands of questions from guests fascinated about the production of maple syrup on our sugar bush.  Many have wandered down to the sugarhouse “in season” and spent time with Bill Fairchild (our neighbor,  friend and sugar maker) as he goes through the production process.
Since last year's event was a resounding success we have decided to schedule this year's “sugar weekend” for Friday March 12 through Sunday March 14th. Reserve for those two nights and we will include  a guided tour of the sugar house with Bill on Saturday afternoon and then head back to the inn for hot refreshments and a warm fire. Bill will join us for dinner on Saturday night ( homemade lasagna, garden salad, fresh baked bread, homemade maple ice cream)  when he will expand upon the history and stories about and the art of Vermont sugar making.  The dinner and breakfast menus will of course have a distinct “maple” flavor.  The cost will be the regular room rate plus $ 20/person to cover dinner,  the tour and Bill’s time.
Here’s your chance to learn all you ever wanted (and perhaps more) about the ancient art of making maple sugar.  The weekend has been marked off on our on line calendar so you will need to call or email to reserve your spot. Reservations need to be made no later than March 1. Open rooms, if any will be unblocked at that time. Email Now to Reserve

Winter Midweek Special - ( January 4, 2010 - April 30, 2010) It is no secret that the best skiing is during the week - fewer people, shorter waits, better powder. It is also no secret that inns and lodging establishments find it challenging to fill their rooms during the week in the off-season. (It's also no secret that everyone is edgy about the economy). IT'S A PERFECT MATCH.
To encourage all of you to make use of weekdays during the winter, we're making the following offer. Come stay with us and to the extent that any or all of your stay includes two weekday nights, (excludes Friday and Saturday), we'll cut the cost of those weekday nights in half. That's right, a 50% discount. So, for example, if you stay Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights, those first two nights will be at half price while Friday will be at the regular rate. Or, if you stay Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the cost of the entire stay is cut in half. Such a deal. No other discount applies. You will need to mention this offer though for the special to apply. Please call or Email Now to Reserve

Canadian At Par  Canadian LoonieEnds April 30, 2010)For many years, the imbalance of the Canadian dollar versus the U.S. dollar, discouraged Canadians from traveling to the U.S. in general and our Inn in particular. To encourage them (and help us) we offered a plan of accepting the Canadian dollar at par for the six months between November 1 and April 30.  The only restriction is that payment needs to be made in either U.S.  or Canadian cash. C'mon down !
Obviously no other discount or special can apply.
