Brattleboro Public Works is using a Geographic Information System (GIS) for mapping and management of our infrastructure databases. This exciting technology allows rapid and custom mapping of most anything once its spatial data (location) is determined and its attributes are collected in a database.
The location of our water, sewer, and drainage structures were originally gathered using GPS by Cartographic Associates, Inc. of Littleton, NH. This data is combined with existing databases for the start of our system. The Town also has digital mapping of town parcels, a building layer, digital aerial photos, and other information. This year (2010) we purchased our own mapping grade GPS unit that allows us to maintain our data and gathering new infrastructure as it is built..
There is also much data available for Brattleboro from other sources such as the Vermont Center for Geographic Information and from the Windham Regional Commission. Below are links to GIS related sites and a few maps produced by Brattleboro Public Works.
Vermont Center for Geographic Information This is a state funded organization that maintains and produces data, and provides education for the GIS community. VCGI acts as a holding and distribution center for data produced by other State Agencies, Regional Commissions and Town Government. Much of the data you may see on our maps and others was downloaded from this site, such as water layers, road centerlines, and many, many others.
Windham Regional Commission Jeff Nugent, a full time GIS professional working at the Windham Regional Commission. On Jeff’s site you will find maps dealing with the many Towns in Windham County including street name maps of all Towns. Check out the excellent street maps of Brattleboro. Road name maps
