I wound up with a free disk and thought I'd try it out. Luckily I have two phone lines and a lot of patience. It wound up taking close to two hours on the phone to them to figure it out (with input from both sides) here's what worked.... Connecting to CompuServe with CompuServe Information Manager 2.4.1 for Macintosh PRELIMINARIES... I found Mac CIM 2.4.1 to be very finicky, I was able to get it to work, but it took some doing, and two extended conversations with their tech support while we experimented on the other line. Here's what worked for me: First off, rebuild your desktop. I rebuild my desktop often, but rebuilding again thwarted the first round of "the application 'unknown has quit' ..." errors. Rebuild the desktop by choosing RESTART from the SPECIAL menu, and holding the option and command (apple) keys down. Next restart again, this time with all extensions off (Hold down the shift key while restarting) I connected with ALL EXTENSIONS OFF and I'd recommend doing it that way till you discover what does and doesn't work on your system. I increased the allocated memory of MacCIM from 2000 to 3000, but this may or not be necessary. To increase the memory, click ONCE on the icon for CompuServe Information Manager so that it is hilighted, then choose GET INFO from the FILE menu. Increase the PREFERRED SIZE from 2000 to 3000. (You cannot have MacCIM open when you do this) SETUP... Open MacCIM (CompuServe Information Manager) From the SPECIAL menu, choose SETTINGS, then CONNECTION Your NAME, USER ID, and PASSWORD will probably already be entered, if not, do so. Ignore the PHONE NUMBER box, the listed number won't be used. Ignore the RETRIES box, 0 is fine Ignore the ALTERNATE box PORT should be where your modem is, most likely MODEM PORT BAUD RATE should be your choice of 300, 2400, 9600 or 14400 other choices are not relevant, as they are not offered as options later. NETWORK should be COMPUSERVE DIAL TYPE should be MANUAL CONNECT There should NOT be a need to click on MODEM or MORE unless circumstances dictate it, for now, leave them as is. CONNECTING... Start the connection (Choose CONNECT from the FILE menu, or anything else to start the connection) A new window will open up, called MANUAL CONNECT. There is a buffer at the bottom where you can type commands which will be sent to the modem when you hit ENTER or RETURN. If you are doubtful about your modem, try typing AT and hitting return, if OK appears on the screen, then your modem is responding. You can also type a NEW modem initialization string at this screen, like AT&F&D0, or AT&F1 To dial the modem, type 'ATDT' followed by the number you want to dial. If you live in Brattleboro, you would type 'ATDT 254 1020' (Spaces dashes and parenthesis are not needed, but you can enter them if you like) You can also add '*70' to disable call waiting, or add '9' for an outside line, or whatever. Someone calling Brattleboro from Hinsdale NH, who wanted to turn off call waiting, would dial 'ATDT *70 1 (802) 254-1020' if you do not have touch tone, use ATDP instead of ATDT After the modem dials, wait for the 'Login:' prompt from SoVerNet, type in your USER NAME, DO NOT add a capital P in front of it, use JUST your user name. Enter your password at the prompt (Your SoVerNet password will appear in the buffer before you send it, so be careful about others seeing your screen) You should see the welcome message from SoVerNet scroll across the screen, and you should be at the $ prompt (hit return if the response is sluggish) this is the point at which I found MacCIM to be VERY prone to sudden spontaneous quitting. Type 'telnet compuserve.com' and hit return Wait a moment, and then hit return again if the screen is blank. You will be prompted for a HOST NAME, enter 'cis' You will be prompted for a choice. enter 'logon' You will be prompted for a connection speed, enter your choice (I assume it should match the settings you chose earlier) When you are prompted for USER ID, click on the word CONTINUE. This will start a script that takes over from here on in. You must be at the EXACT spot in the login process when you are prompted for USER ID, or the script will not work and the application will crash. The program will take over the rest of the login process and you will wind up connected with all the buttons and windows active! Good Luck! Alan 7/22/95
