Here's a posting from Global Village: Please check to be sure you are using the most current version of Mac PPP, version 2.01 of better. If so, please check your Mac PPP setup. € Open the PPP control panel to get to the Config PPP window. € Select the port € for Echo Interval choose Off € Check Terminal Window and Hangup on Close € Check Quiet Modem if you don't want to hear the modem. € Click on Config... € Select the Port Speed: 2400 for Bronze 19,200 for Silver 38,400 for Gold 57,600 for Mercury € For Flow Control, select CTS only for connections of 9600 or better ** Note for the Bronze modems and the PowerPort Mercury in the PowerBook 2xx or 5xx, choose None for Flow Control. € Select Tone (unless you are using a rotary phone) € Enter phone number € For Modem Init: AT&F for all Bronze modems AT&F1 for TelePort Silver, Gold and Mercury AT&F1 for PowerPort Mercury in the PB 1xx AT&F for PowerPort Mercury in the PB Duo, 2xx or 5xx AT&F\J0\Q3\N7%C1\V2W1 for PowerPort Silver and Gold ** Note: If you are having a problem with connections using the Silver, Gold or Mercury modems, try using the predial init above and adding a %C0 (that's a zero) to the end of the init string. This is often needed when connecting to main frames and UNIX systems. If your settings are correct and you continue to have problems with PPP, try trashing the PPP Preferences, found in the Preference folder in the System folder.
